A day in my life, by Steve Maynard

How would you describe your role?

As a Managing Consultant, I have a broad role that gives me the opportunity to make an impact within our business and with specific clients. From an internal perspective, I am involved with our business strategy, and play a role in our bid-winning activity and internal communication. My work with clients is normally at a business architecture level. Both require an in-depth understanding of the organisation so that I can assess the biggest challenges and apply strategic thinking to identify the best solutions

What do you most enjoy about your role?

My role gives me the opportunity to engage with people at all levels of the business; from those who deliver the projects to senior stakeholders. I am lucky enough to be able to apply my experience and insight within Triad and for clients such as the Ministry of Justice and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

I get immense satisfaction from knowing that client organisations have the confidence in us to understand their problems and resolve them.  I enjoy the challenge of building my own knowledge of how organisations work and where their biggest challenges lie, so that I can help identify the most appropriate solutions.

What are the three non-negotiable behaviours that you ask for from your colleagues?

I don’t have three non-negotiable behaviours as such. But what I look for in colleagues is that they will say what they are going to do, do what they have said, and at the first opportunity, when they know it’s not going to be achieved, let someone know. This is something that I expect from myself too. It’s a simple mantra that encourages open and honest communication with transparency.  It enables you to build a rapport with someone because they quickly learn that they can trust you to deliver, and alert them if there is a problem.

 What is your superpower?

I don’t know if it’s a superpower, but I can juggle lots of things at once.  I can see, and work with the big picture, as well as get to grips with detail too; so, I can work with the macro and the micro.

Marketing spin aside, what do you think makes Triad different from other IT consultancies?

Well, it’s the people, but other consultancies say that too! One of our corporate goals is to be a “good and decent company” and we are all encouraged by our Managing Director to “do the right thing” for our clients. I think that empowers people to care about the positive impact that their work has on the client. And it encourages us to look after one another too.

There is a culture of mutual respect, where people genuinely want to spend time with each other. When we catch up for internal sessions, you can see a wonderful balance of intense professionalism, good humour and camaraderie.
